August 5/6: Happy Bday Laron Profit

Happy birthday Laron Profit. Laron played for both the Terps and the Wizards. Laron was a 3-year starter at Maryland and ranks in the top 20 in several career statistical categories for them. He had a solid all around game and averaged 12.5 pts, 4.6 rebs and 2.3 ast per game. He played 110 of his 135 career NBA games with the Wizards, spread out over 3 seasons. Take a look at the 3 pointer he hit at the buzzer to beat the Tim Duncan led Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Happy 32nd Mr. Profit..

Happy birthday Pierson Prioleau. Pierson played for the Skins from 2005-2007, playing in 31 games. He played very well on special teams and stepped up at safety after the awful Adam Archuleta debacle. Pierson played for Greg Williams in Buffalo, Washington, Jacksonville and now New Orleans. Pierson is definitely a Williams’s guy. I like Pierson and I’m glad he fought back from the gruesome knee injury he suffered in game 1 of the 2006 season. Pierson also played at Virginia Tech. Happy 32nd Mr. Prioleau.

Happy birthday Darwin Cook. Darwin played for the Bullets during the 87-87 season. He played in all 82 games that year as a backup guard, averaging 7.5 pts. He retired after the 88-89 season (his 8th) with a career avg of 9.5 pts and 3.7 ast per game. In retirement Darwin coached as an assistant at UNLV and Pepperdine. Happy 51st Mr. Cook.

Happy birthday Otis Thorpe. Otis played 1 of his 15 season with the Washington Wizards, in the 98-99 season. He came to the Wizards along with Mitch Richmond, in the trade that sent Chris Webber to the Kings. Otis averaged 11.3 pts and 6.8 rebs in his lone season in DC. For his career he had averages of 14 and 8. Otis ranks in the top 20 all time in several NBA categories including games played and rebounds. Happy 47th Mr. Thorpe.

Cheers and Hail

August 3: Happy Birthdays

Happy birthday Don Breaux. Don coached in the NFL for 27 seasons, 17 of those in DC. He has 3 Super Bowl rings from his 2 separate tenures with Washington, Gibbs I and Gibbs II. During Gibbs I he was running backs coach, helping 4 different RB’s reach 1,000+ yards in a season (Riggins, Rogers, Byner and Brooks.) In Gibbs II he was the pseudo offensive coordinator, though Gibbs and Al Saunders called the plays. Don retired from the Skins right before the season last year, citing a heart condition. Don also played 2 seasons in the NFL as a QB with the Broncos and Chargers. Happy 69th Mr. Breaux.

Happy birthday Doug Overton. Doug spent the first 3 seasons of his 11 year career with the Washington Bullets, from 1992-95. His best season came in 94-95’, when he played in all 82 games, averaging 7 points and 3 assist per game. Overall, Doug played in 188 games with the Bullets averaging 6.1PTS. He was traded (along with Don Maclean) for Robert Pack in 1995. In retirement, Doug got into coaching and is now an assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets. Happy 40th Mr. Overton.

Happy birthday N.D. Kalu. N.D. played defensive end for 3 seasons with the Redskins from 1998-200. N.D. appeared in 40 games and registered 7.5 sacks and 35 tackles. I was a fan of N.D’s because he wore #72, and reminded me a little of Dexter…well very little actually. N.D. played last season in Houston and has played 11 total seasons in the NFL; he’s currently a free agent. Check out the YouTube below of the Skins 2000 defense. Happy 34th Mr. Kalu.

Cheers and Hail

July 30: Happy Birthday Jim Mcllvaine

Happy birthday Jim Mcllvaine. Jim is best remembered for parlaying his two seasons with the Bullets into a 7 year 33 million dollar free agent deal with the Sonics. Oh, I forgot to mention that Jim averaged 2.0 pts and 2.5 rebs a game during his 2 seasons with the Bullets. I’m not sure what the Sonics were expecting or thinking, but Jim did increase his production to 3.0 pts and 3.5 rebs a game in his 2 years with them. Jim lasted 7 seasons in the league and was paid not to play in the final year of his contract. Jim now works as an analyst for Marquette (his alma mater) basketball games. Happy 37th Mr. Mcllvaine.

July 23: Happy Birthday Darvin Ham

On a daily basis, Fatpickled recognizes the birthdays of the men who have played, and currently play for, my favorite teams. The Redskins, Orioles, Wizards, and Terps.

Happy birthday Darvin Ham. Darvin played 1 season with the Washington Bullets in the 1997-98 season. He didn’t do much on the court, averaging just 2.0 pts and 1.8 rebounds per game. Darvin played 8 seasons in the NBA and won a championship with Detroit. He’s also played overseas and is still plugging away in the NBA’s D League. The real reason for this post is an excuse to post the highlight of his tremendous dunk in the 1997 NCAA Tournament. While playing for Texas Tech (a surprise sweet 16 team that year) Darvin shattered the backboard with a tremendous dunk that landed him on the cover of SI. Happy 36th Mr. Ham!

Cheers and Hail

July 7: Happy Birthdays

On a daily basis, Fatpickled recognizes the birthdays of the men who have played, and currently play for, my favorite teams. The Redskins, Orioles, Wizards, and Terps.

Happy birthday Michael Westbrook. Michael spent 7 seasons in Washington, as an underachieving 4th overall pick. Mostly known for sucker punching Stephen Davis, Westbrook did have a decent season in 1999. That year he hooked up with Brad Johnson 65 times for 1,191 yards and 9 TD’s. The following year he blew out his ACL and was gone for good the year after. His final career numbers were not hateful, 324-4,112-26, but fall far short of Joey Galloway’s, who was chosen 4 spots later (Steve Mcnair was drafted directly in front of Westbrook, RIP.)
Since retiring,
Westbrook has fought in some weird MMA fights. The best thing that I can remember about Michael was his 40 yard TD reception against the Cardinals in 1997. It was the first game ever at the former Jack Kent Cooke stadium. The reception came in overtime and was a beautiful diving grab. I nearly hit my head on the ceiling jumping up and down. Happy 37th Michael.

Happy birthday Ralph Sampson. The Virginia native closed out his NBA career with the Bullets during the 1991-92 season. He lasted just 10 games, averaging 2.2 pts and 3.0 rebounds for a team that won just 25 games. Of course we all know that Sampson was one of the greatest college players of all-time, a 4 time All-American and 3 time AP Player of the year at UVA. He won the NBA Rookie of the year award, and was a good NBA player before his knees betrayed him. After retirement he’s had a tough time, with several brushes with the law. But it’s all good today, as Sampson turns 49.

Crab Dribble

Is there something on my chin?

I’ve played and watched a lot of basketball in my time, but this week was the first time I heard the term “crab dribble.” I’m familiar with the “crab walk”, an old school exercise from football practice back in the day. When researching for this post, I learned the urban dictionary meaning for “crabwalk.”(Warning, adult humor)

Basketball wasn’t my sport, although I was an awesome shooter. However, I didn’t enjoy passing the ball or playing defense, sounds like I could have made the NBA!

I do know what a travel is, and I love Lebron James being called for one in the final seconds of a tight game. The Wizards may be terrible this season, but their rivalry with the Cavs is worth watching.

(I’ve watched this several times, he may take 4 steps?)
