The Adam Jones Burger

If you are a follower of Adam Jones on social media sites such as twitter or Instagram, you’re well aware that Jones is a food enthusiast. He’s constantly posting “food porn” pictures and signs off on many of his posts with the hashtag #stayhungry. After this past off-season, I honestly expected Jones to show up to spring training carrying an extra 10 lbs or so. However, Jones is in great shape and appears ready to lead the Orioles to some more “Oriole’s Magic”.

Now comes the news that Jones has joined the likes of other great athletes (Ben Roethlisberger, Stephen Strasburg) who’ve had a burger named in their honor. The Abbey Burger Bistro in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore is now offering the Simply AJ10 burger. The Abbey Burger Bistro features an “enticing selection of flavors for any burger palate” and was named Maryland’s “Great Burger Joint” by USA Today.

Apparently, Jones is a frequent visitor and has used the “build your own” option on the menu to construct his own burger which is now offered to the public. The restaurant is donating $1 for each burger sold to Adam’s charity, which is a nice gesture. Of course that dollar is a small portion of the profits, the AJ10 burger costs a hefty $15.50. The burger does come with tater tots (love them) and nacho cheese…although I would substitute the nacho cheese with the crab dip and tots which sounds amazing.

As far as the burger itself and in the words of Adam Jones…it definitely looks like something I would “smash”. Kobe beef on an english muffin (nice) with pepper jack cheese, avocado, jalapenos, bacon, chili pepper mayo, lettuce and tomato. They must have an engineer in the kitchen to fit all that on an english muffin.

Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m going to try to cure the hunger pains I’ve developed while writing this post.

Cheers and Hail

Orioles…Magic?

I have all kinds of reasons to be excited and optimistic about the 2010 Orioles. The O’s are loaded with young talent, they’ve added some key veterans and have moved their spring training home to within an hour drive or so from my house. Sure they haven’t had a winning record in the last 12 years and I’ve dropped a $1,000.00 or more watching a 60-70 win team play on the MLB ticket during that time…but this is the time of year that I can be excited for my O’s.

It’s not unrealistic to think the Orioles have a chance to make a run at the wild card, just look at the 2008 Rays as an example. I know playing in the AL East makes it extremely difficult to break .500, let alone make the playoffs…but this O’s squad has talent.

OK, maybe I’m talking out my ass about the playoffs, but take a look around the diamond with me concerning the talent.

C- Matt Wieters - Batted .288-9-43 last season. No reason to believe that he can’t double those numbers this year. He’ll be moving up in the lineup, playing a full season and he’s only going to get better.

1B- Garret Atkins - No question Garret had a sub-par 2009 season, but Terry Crowley is known to get the best out of hitters. In the 3 previous seasons to 09′ Atkins averaged .305-25-110. If he approaches those numbers in 2010, he’ll be a steal for the O’s.

2B- Brian Roberts - Everyone loves Brian for good reason, he’s just a hard nosed, gritty and talented ballplayer entering his 10th season in an Oriole’s uniform. You can book him to score 100 runs, steal 30+ bases and hit 50+ extra base hits.

SS- Cesar Izturis - Cesar is not going to put up big offensive #’s, but he does play solid defense and handles the bat well. Cesar struck out less than 10% of the time last season and if he can duplicate that again this year while stealing 15+ bases…I’ll take it.

3B- Miguel Tejada - I’m happy to see Iggy back in an O’s uniform. The power may be gone..hmmmm, I wonder why…but he’s still a pure hitter. I expect Iggy to make the adjustment well to 3B and hit somewhere in the neighborhood of .300-15-80.

LF- Nolan Reimold - After years of stalling in the minors, Nolan got his chance last season and made the most out of it. I think his game fits well at Camden Yards and he reminds me of Bill Ripken…so I naturally love him. I’m still not sold completely.

CF- Adam Jones - Adam broke out in a big way last year, making his first All-Star team and showing all of his 5-tool abilities. Expect more this season. 30-30…I’m just sayin.

RF- Nick Markakis - My current favorite player, you can write it in cement that he hits .300-20-100 or better. I hope the beard is gone for spring training.

DH- Luke Scott - He may be the streakiest hitter I’ve ever seen. He can hit 5HR’s one week, and not get 2 hits the next…just bat him in the middle of the lineup when he’s hot.

OK, that’s the good news…unfortunately you have to pitch in baseball, more on that later.

Cheers and Hail

August 1: Happy Bday Adam Jones

On a daily basis, Fatpickled recognizes the birthdays of the men who have played, and currently play for, my favorite teams. The Redskins, Orioles, Wizards, and Terps.

Happy birthday Adam Jones. What can I say about this stud? Fresh off his first all star appearance, he’s a bonafide superstar in the making. Thru 94 games this season Adam is batting .296 with 17HR’s and 59RBI’s. Those numbers already exceed last year’s rookie season. He has speed and power… he has the potential to be a 30/30 guy. He’s got a gun for an arm, although it may not be as good as Markakis’s (certainly not as accurate.) The trade that brought Adam to the Orioles will go down as one of the most lopsided deals ever, and Macphail should get a monument on Eutaw St. for it. Adam also has the greatest bobblehead ever, and I want/need it! Ok, ok…I heart Adam. Happy 24th (he’s only 24!) Mr. Jones.

Happy birthday Darnerien McCants. Darnerien played in 29 games over 3 seasons with the Redskins from 2002-2004. His best season came in 2003 when he led the Redskins with 6 TD’s to go along with his 27 receptions for 360 yards. After leaving DC, Darnerien played one season with the Eagles and bounced around some training camps. Darnerien was a local guy who grew up in Gambrills, Maryland and his idol growing up was Art Monk. During his time in DC, he may have been more well know for banging Vivica Fox and his art, than for football. McCants is an accomplished artist and musician and you can check out his stuff at his website right here. Happy 32nd Mr. McCants!

Happy birthday Greg Williams. Not the Greg Williams who was the Redskins D coordinator from 2004-07, this would be the Greg Williams who played defensive back for the Skins from 1982-1985. I must admit that even I, who consider myself an expert in Redskins history, do not remember much about Greg. He did appear in 57 games for the Skins, and has a Super Bowl ring from 82’. He must have been a special teams demon with a nose for the football…he recovered 6 fumbles in his career. Happy 50th Mr. Williams.
Cheers and Hail
