Training Camp Champs?
Football is back, and itâs back in a big way. Weâre going from zero to 60 in record speed as training camp, free agency and very soon preseason are already upon us. In past years the Redskins have earned the nickname “offseason champs” for their abilities to get everyone drinking the kool-aid with their premium free agent acquisitions…only to have those Super Bowl dreams slashed by another 6-10 season.
The Redskins are expected to be very active in free agency again this year after laying low last year. The Redskins have plenty of cap space and 40% of the NFLâs players are currently free agents. This could be a bonanza of signings that could rival any spending spurge seen during the Dan Snyder era…imagine that. But, if that happens we canât be the “offseason champs” because itâs no longer offseason. Thus, if as expected the Redskins are aggressive and win big in free agency, the title should be “training camp champs.”
Iâm really anxious to see how the Redskins are going to handle the Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb situations. I doubt either will be at Redskins Park come Thursday…are the Redskins going to let their sagas play out over a period of time or get them handled quickly? Will they be able to trade either, or both…for any value or just have to cut ties and have nothing but bad memories and lost millions to show for them? Whatever they decide, I believe they need to get it handled quickly and donât let anymore bad cancer fester around the locker room.
The last thing Iâd like to say as we wrap up this post is that I do believe the Redskins are in a better situation to deal with this crazy schedule than most other teams because of their head coach. Iâm not a fan of Mike Shanahan and Iâve let that be known on several occasions…but to have a coach with 17 years experience whoâs handled all types of adversity over his career, well thatâs got to help some. We certainly should have a leg up on the Cowboys who have a head coach entering his first training camp and also have cap issues. Redskins > Cowboys.
Cheers and Hail
