FedEx Field: Bad Luck Or Cursed?

Robert Griffin III is set to make his FedEx Field debut this Saturday against the Colts and some guy that goes by the name Luck. And while RGIII and Andrew Luck’s careers will be forever linked and compared, the question in my mind is…will the Redskins luck at FedEx Field change with the arrival of RGIII?

I’m not convinced that it’s just bad luck (and a lot of bad teams) as to the reason why the Redskins have struggled to win games at FedEx Field. I’m starting to wonder if FedEx Field is cursed. The Bears, Cardinals, Red Sox, Cubs and many other sports teams have suffered from curses, who’s to say that the Redskins aren’t as well?

The Redskins have won 50 games and lost 54 at FedEx over the 13 seasons that Dan Snyder has owned the team. 13 years is a pretty large sample size. 13 years of signing the best available free agents, 13 years of signing the best available coaches and all we have is a losing record to show for it. And guess what…the losing is getting worse. The Redskins have lost 11 of the last 13 games at FedEx Field. Redskins fans haven’t been able to watch a home playoff game since 1999!

The root of the curse? The Cooke family. The first order of business that Snyder had as owner was to erase Jack Kent Cooke’s name off the stadium that Cooke spent his final years on earth building. Snyder didn’t stop there, he also stopped recognizing the area around FedEx Field as Raljon, MD. Raljon was named after JKC’s sons, Ralph and John.

Jack Kent Cooke died before the first game was ever played at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium FedEx Field. Ralph Kent Cooke passed away in 1995. In death, they were disrespected…and this is how curses start. Crazy? Maybe, maybe not.

Whether it’s the Cooke family or just Dan Snyder, FedEx Field hasn’t been kind to the Redskins or the fans. Hopefully, RGIII is the remedy needed to reverse the curse.

Cheers and Hail

10 For 80: Danny’s Doing It Wrong Again

In honor of the Redskins 80th Anniversary season the Redskins recently announced their “10 For 80” fan vote. “10 For 80” is a fan vote to decide the 10 Redskins players to be added to the list of the “70 Greatest Redskins” team that was chosen 10 years ago. As a fan of the Redskins for 30+ years I was excited to choose my picks that will forever be engraved in Redskins history. To my amazing disappointment, the 2 players that deserve to be on this team the most aren’t even eligible under Dan Snyder’s asinine rules.

Chris Cooley and Santana Moss are no-brainers to be included on the “80 Greatest Redskins” roster…yet you can’t vote for them. Here’s the stupid rule for the criteria for being eligible for the 80 which eliminates them from consideration:

Active NFL players are eligible, but any current team member must have spent at least 10 years with the team to be eligible

So, if you’re a former player you’re eligible if you only played 3 seasons for the Redskins but if you’re a current player for the Redskins you have to have played 10+ seasons? What kind of sense does that make? Both Cooley and Moss are possible training camp cuts. It would look horrible from a PR standpoint to have cut a player that the fans just chose as one of the greatest players in franchise history, could this have anything everything to do with this rule? And, if they had been cut back in March they’d be eligible but because they’re still busting their asses for the burgundy and gold they are ineligible? STUPID

And why bring players back into the equation that were already eligible for the “70 Greatest” roster? They were already passed over once…we have to choose from “sloppy seconds” instead of guys who deserve to be on this roster?

Here are some facts:

39 of the original 70 Greatest Redskins played less than 10 seasons for the Skins. Obviously, the 10 season barrier means nothing.

The other 2 TE’s on the ballot (Clint Didier & Rick Walker) have a combined 164 receptions vs. Cooley’s 428.

No other WR on the ballot has half the stats that Moss has.

Moss & Cooley rank 4th & 5th all-time in career receptions in Redskins history yet we can’t vote for them.

Moss & Cooley rank 4th & 9th all-time in career receiving yards in Redskins history yet we can’t vote for them.

Moss & Cooley rank 7th & 9th all-time in career receiving TD’s in Redskins history yet we can’t vote for them.

For me, it’s clear that this “rule” should be changed immediately so that these 2 players can be where the belong, on the roster of the “80 Greatest Redskins”

Cheers and Hail

Long Ding

Last week the Jacksonville Jaguars worked out a kicker with an interesting name.

Jacksonville worked out kickers Long Ding, who was trying to become the first Chinese-born player to make an NFL roster, and Jay Wooten. But they declined to sign either.

I was disappointed Ding wasn’t able to penetrate the Jaguars roster. Perhaps Dan Snyder should sign Ding to the Redskins so he can finally have a Long Ding. As you can see from the last 2 sentences the possibilities for shtick are endless.

“Long Ding is off to the left”

“Long Ding has been working hard all off-season”

“Long Ding hits it deep into the end zone”

“Long Ding rises to the occasion again”

“Long Ding comes up limp”

“Long Ding blocked from scoring”

“Long Ding getting loose on the sidelines”

It’s ironic that Ding is Chinese…“long” goes against Chinese typecast. Please feel free to add your shtick in the comments section.

Dan Snyder And His Burgundy Ties

Dan Snyder has a closet full of burgundy ties. New coach, new burgundy tie. Game day, new burgundy tie. Free agents…draft picks, new burgundy ties. Here’s a collection of Dan’s ties and what he was thinking as he was wearing them.

"You wait till now to tell me you're not going to work on Sundays?!"

"Why's everyone asking me where's Waldo?"

" I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is."

"F*&k you, F you too"

"I work out!"

"If this old bastard thinks I'm really giving him total control he's off his rocker!"

"Tell me I look like Joe Pa again...I love it when you say I look like Joe Pa"

"No! See the Sherm on the left? He's going to call the play to the Sherm on the right and then send it to you...got it?

"I'd like to fire this asshole right now!"

Vinny Cerrato: I’m Dumber Than You Think

It’s been said many times that Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato should’ve been the characters in ‘Dumb and Dumber’. Well, if that’s the case, then the day Vinny called Brian Xanders must’ve been the inspiration for ‘Dumb and Dumberer’.

From DC Sports Bog and via some SiriusXM radio show, Vinny disclosed a trade he tried to make during the 2009 draft:

“Like, the year that we were gonna take Orapko [sic], you know, we were trying to trade up with everybody, trying to trade up. Then Denver’s on the clock the pick before us, and I called them. How about this, I offer them a third-round pick to swap, and they called me back and they said No, you’re gonna get your guy, don’t worry about it, you don’t have to trade. How about that one?” [Laughter.]

So, Vinny tried to trade the Redskins 1st rd pick plus a 3rd to move up ONE spot. STUPID. The Broncos brain trust, despite knowing the Redskins were targeting Brian Orakpo and not Knowshon Moreno, turned down this offer. STUPIDER.

Knowshon Moreno was a bust while Orakpo has been a stud for the Redskins. Sometimes the best deals are the ones that are never made. Vinny is long gone and in the words of Ron White “You can’t fix stupid.”

Dan Snyder “I’m On A Boat”

Dan Snyder has dropped $70 million on a very impressive “superyacht” named the Lady Anne. I wonder if he’s going to sing this song as he makes his maiden voyage?

I’ve been on a boat many times in my life and only 3 things happen. People get drunk, people try to catch fish…and people take their clothes off!!! I can only assume that when someone steps onto a $70 million dollar boat a combination of all three will happen.

Have fun Dan, but please remember 2 things. The happiest day of a boat owner’s life are the day they purchase the boat and the day they sell it. Also, it’s bad luck to change the name of the boat…no matter how much you pay for it. Perhaps that explains the bad luck of the Redskins since you’ve owned the team… maybe it’s bad luck to change the name of a stadium as well?

Cheers and Hail
