Darrell Green > Deion Sanders

Ok, I’ll be the first to admit that the title to this post comes from a true Redskins homer and outside of the Redskins fan base you’re probably not going to find a whole lot of people who’ll agree with me. But, when you take a look at the two players career stats, it seems as though an argument for Darrell certainly deserves merit.

Seasons - Green 20 Sanders 14
Games - Green 295 Sanders 188
Pro Bowls - Green 7 Sanders 8
Tackles - Green 1,197 Sanders 512
Int’s - Green 54 Sanders 53
Defensive TD’s - Green 8 Sanders 10

The only area where Sanders clearly held an edge was in the kick/punt returns category and All-Pro selections. Sanders had 7 All-Pro selections to just 1 for Green. However, Green only returned punts in key situations for the Redskins (see 1987 Playoffs) while Sanders specialized in the return game for his entire career. It’s also worth noting that by season 12 Sanders skills were diminishing…you know, around the time he joined the Redskins. In Sanders 13th and 14th seasons he was a nickel corner and free safety. Darell Green made the Pro Bowl in his 14th and 15th seasons!

As far as the video, I couldn’t help thinking that if it were Deion who had hurdled Cap Boso in that 87′ playoff game against the Bears…Sanders would have had an aneurysm celebrating on his way to the end zone. Green played his 20 seasons with a certain style and grace that I guess only true Redskins fans can love. The ‘World’s Fastest Athlete’ highlights at the beginning of the above video are simply awesome.

Cheers and Hail
