12/4-12/6: Weekend Birthdays

Art_Monk_

Happy birthday Art Monk. One of the greatest WR’s to ever play in the NFL, Art was finally elected to the HOF in 2008…where he received the longest ovation in the history of the induction ceremonies. At one time Art owned nearly every receiving record, both for a season or a career. Art still holds every Redskin record…and appears in no danger of losing any of those to Malcolm Kelly or Devin Thomas. A selfless, hard-nosed player and a true gentleman. Happy 52nd Mr. Monk.

Happy birthday Perry Brooks. Perry played 8 seasons for the Redskins from 1978-84’. Perry is a Super Bowl champion and an old friend/co-worker of mine. Perry gave his tickets to Porkboy and I for the last game ever at RFK (when the Skins demolished the Cowboys!) Perry’s son Ahmad plays for the 49er’s. Happy 55th Mr. Brooks.

Happy birthday Gary Roenicke. “Rhino” played 8 seasons for the Orioles from 1978-1985. He was part of one of the most well known and succesfull platoons of all-time, sharing LF with John Lowenstein for most of those years. Gary appeared in 850 games as an Oriole, smacking 106 HR’s and driving in 352. His best season was in1982 when he hit .270-21-74. Gary has a son who plays for the Blue Jays and has worked as a scout for the Orioles the past 7 years. Happy 55th Mr. Roenicke.

Happy birthday Larry Sheets. Larry played 6 seasons in Baltimore from 1984-89’. Born and raised in Staunton, VA, Larry was a 2nd round pick in78’ out of high school. Larry’s best season came in 87’ when he hit .316 with 31 HR’s and 94 RBI’s. Overall, Larry hit .268-84-286 as an Oriole. In retirement, Larry opened a youth sports facility in Westminster, MD. Happy 50th Mr. Sheets.

Happy birthday Bernard King. Bernard played for seasons for the Bullets from 1987-1991. He came to the Bullets as a free agent after blowing out his knee, but recovered nicely to average 22 PPG during his tenure. A prolific scorer, Bernard’s best season came in 90-91’ when he averaged 28.4 pts, 5 reb’s, and 4.6 ast per game and made the All-Star team. Bernard led the NBA in scoring as a Knick in 84-85 with 32.9 PPG. Happy 53rd Mr. King.
