Lost In Translation

PHOTO VIA REDSKINS BLOG

Look, we all know that the Redskin’s press conferences and press releases that happened yesterday have a certain amount of bull shit to them. Luckily for you, my valued reader…I have a bull shit detector/translator that I have used to put said “B.S.” into plain old English.

Vinny Cerrato:

“I’m thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I’ve been given over the years.”

TRANSLATION

The biscuit wheels have come off this gravy train, I can no longer brown nose my way any longer.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with some great coaches such as Joe Gibbs, Greg Blache and Sherman Lewis, great people on the Redskins staff, and, most especially, some of the best professional football players in the world. I wish them all the best,” Cerrato said. “I’ve also had the privilege of working for a franchise supported by the most loyal fans in the NFL.”

TRANSLATION

Jim Zorn is the asshole that got me fired…I gave him the best professional players in the world and he F’d it all up. And to the fans who started revolutions and made signs…you win.

Dan Snyder (on Vinny):

“More importantly, he is my friend, and he has always been there for me and the Redskins,” Snyder said. “He’s the consummate optimist and has always made decisions based on what would be the best for the team.”

TRANSLATION

He’s a decent racquetball player who was crazy enough to think we could win with that offensive line.

“Obviously, Bruce has got the authority,” Snyder said. “And when he makes a decision, the club makes a decision, it’s a Redskins decision. … I’ve not been as involved as people may have thought. In terms of the future, obviously we’re going to be counting on Bruce to help lead the way.”

TRANSLATION

This mess is Vinny’s…not mine. Moving forward Bruce will make the decisions (after I tell them what they are i.e. Shanahan.) The decisions will now be made under the new codeword “Redskins” decisions.

Dan Snyder (on Allen):

“Bruce Allen is the personification of an NFL winner,” Snyder said. “Our fans know his heritage; we know his abilities. He is the right person to lead our club.”

TRANSLATION

I’ve gone back to the glory days again…the fans loved it with Joe…my approval rating should rise instantly. I think I’ll wear my belt buckle to the press conference and buy Bruce and I matching ties.

Bruce Allen (on Jon Gruden):

“Well, we don’t have an opening at that position,” said Allen. “And I have a close relationship with hundreds of coaches in this league, but Jim Zorn is our coach. I met him two hours before meeting you here, so give us some time to see how our relationship develops.”

TRANSLATION

I’m going to kiss Jim before I F him. And you guys are all wrong…the Danny wants Shanahan, not Gruden.

Cheers and Hail

12/16 Happy Birthdays

brip

Happy birthday Billy Ripken. Billy played 7 seasons for the Orioles from 1986-92’ & 96’. I’ve written several times about Billy, he’s one of my favorite players and people. I could write about his stats…but if you watched Billy play you know that you can’t measure him by stats alone. He was a hard-nosed player who player who played the game the way it’s supposed to be played (The Ripken Way.) He sacrificed runners to second, hit behind them to move them to third, slid hard into second to break up double plays and went from 1st to 3rd on a single. Those things don’t show up in a box score, but they are just as important as RBI’s and HR’s. Happy 45th Mr. Ripken.

Happy birthday Mike Flanagan. Mike played 15 seasons for the Orioles covering 3 decades from 1975-87’ and 91-92’. Mike won 141 games and had a 3.89 ERA as an Oriole. Mike’s best year came in 1979 when he was an All-Star and won the CY Young Award. He was 23-9 that year, starting 40 games and completing 17 of them. Mike ranks on the Orioles top ten all-time list in nearly every pitching category. In retirement Mike has worked for the Orioles in many capacities including GM. Happy 58th Mr. Flanagan.

Happy birthday Jeff Ruland. Jeff played 5 seasons as a Center-Forward for the Bullets from 1981-86’. Jeff had an awesome career, averaging 18.7 PTS and 10.9 REBS as a Bullet. His best season came in his All-Star year of 83-84’ when he led the league in minutes per game (41.1) and averaged 22.2 PTS and 12.3 REBS. Jeff was traded to the 76ers after the 86’ season in a very lopsided deal that saw the Bullets get Terry Catledge, Harvey Grant & Moses Malone in return. In retirement Jeff has coached in both college and the NBA and currently is the head coach at UDC. Happy 51st Mr. Ruland

Cheers and Hail

I have remained quiet on the Tiger Woods situation…so I’ve decided to put my thoughts into video form. Thanks to Porkboy for the idea.

The Redskins Top 10 Games Of The 2000′s

shirt_redskins_raljon

Skins defeat Lions 27-13. Jan 8, 2000

The Skins led 27-0 at halftime and cruised to a playoff victory behind Steven Davis’s 119 yards rushing and 2 TD’s. This was the last playoff game at FedEx field…yes folks, it’s been 10 years. How long has Dan Snyder owned the team? Oh yeah, it’s his 10 year anniversary as well.

Skins defeat Cowboys 20-14. Dec 29, 2002

On the last day of the season, the Redskins finished a subpar 7-9 season with a win over the hated Cowboys. This was the last game ever for Darrell Green, who emotionally addressed the fans and did a final victory lap. It was his 20th season and 295th game in a Redskin uniform. Hail to you Mr. Green.

Skins defeat Bucs 16-10. Sept 12, 2004

On opening day Skins fans celebrated the return of Joe Gibbs and were introduced to Clinton Portis. Clinton took it 64 yards to the house on the Skins first offensive play from scrimmage…it was the old counter tray play. Visions of 16-0 and Super Bowl titles danced in our heads. Alas it didn’t work out the way we wanted…and Gibbs II ended 4 years later at 30-34. But, for 1 grand day…we were on top of the world!

Skins defeat Cowboys 14-13. Sept 19, 2005

On this Monday night, my body did something I didn’t know it was capable of…for 1 small moment in time I had the ups of Kobe Bryant. The first TD pass to Moss brought nervous excitement, but the 2nd one brought out a wild and crazy man who screamed and jumped…waking an angry wife and 1 year old son. Phone calls and text messages to friends offering congrats and celebration…couldn’t sleep because of the excitement. We may not have those times too often these days…but we’ll always have that Monday night!

Skins defeat Cowboys, Giants & Eagles in successive weeks to make playoffs. Dec 18-Jan 01 2006.

Ultimately the Skins won 5 games in a row to end the 2005 season and make the playoffs, but it was the final 3 wins that made it extra special. I’ve lumped the 3 together because it was part of one big moment…the greatest run the Redskins have had in last 10 years. They demolished the Cowboys 35-7 behind Chris Cooley’s 3 first half TD’s. The Skins then whooped up on the Giants 35-20, as Clinton Portis ran for 108 yards and a TD and then passed for another TD to Cooley. The Skins still needed to win at Philly to make the playoffs. The Skins did just that, as Sean Taylor capped a 31-20 win with a 39 yd fumble recovery and flip into the end zone. Anytime I think of Sean…that’s the picture I see in my mind. That 5 week run plus the playoff victory in Tampa Bay was a special, special time in Redskins history.

Skins defeat Jaguars 36-30. Oct 1, 2006

Mark Brunell hooked up with Santana Moss on a 68 yard TD pass in OT to seal the victory for the Skins. Washington amassed 481 total yards and Moss finished with 138 yards and 3 TD’s. The Skins offense was really cooking at this point as they had 495 yards the week before against the Texans. But, things changed drastically over the next several weeks and in week 10, Gibbs handed the keys to the franchise over to Jason Campbell.

Skins defeat Cowboys 22-19. Nov 5, 2006

Nick Novak made a 47 yd FG with no time left in one of the craziest finishes in Redskin’s history. A blocked Cowboy FG attempt (when do the Skins block FG’s) and another amazingly athletic return by Sean Taylor led to Novak’s attempt. Pandemonium ensues as FedEx.

Skins lose to Bills 17-16. Dec 2, 2007

The Skins didn’t win this game…in fact it was as disheartening a loss as any in the past 10 years. Playing for the first time since Sean Taylor’s death, the team desperately wanted this win as a tribute to Sean. The game began with the 10 man formation tribute and ended with Gibb’s questioning himself…wondering if the game had passed him by. But, the season was not lost and just days after Sean’s funeral the Redskins defeated the Bears to start another 4 game winning streak to make the playoffs. The game may have passed Gibbs, but people had not. Hail Coach Gibbs.

Cheers and Hail
