Reggie Jones: “You’re Going To Notice Me Somehow”

Reggie Jones will be posting a training camp journal on this site, please check back often to follow Reggie on his journey.

Reggie Jones has a Super Bowl ring and a tattoo of the NFL logo on his right bicep. He’s entering his 3rd NFL season, but he’s never played in a regular season NFL game. The tattoo is there to remind him that all he ever wanted to do was play in the NFL and the ring proves he’s been to the top. But he’s still never played in the NFL…he’s kind of like Moonlight Graham. The tattoo goes back to a day when he was in middle school…

If you’re a fan of the Redskins and you enjoy pulling for an underdog then you need not look any further than cornerback Reggie Jones. Don’t know who Reggie Jones is? Understandable, he’s yet to play a game in a Redskins uniform and only the most diehard of fans may know that Reggie Jones is on the Redskins roster. Up to this point he’s been a practice squad player with a fairly common name that makes you think you’ve heard of him before…but maybe you’ve got him confused with someone else. I’m here to tell all of you now, there is nothing common about Reggie Jones and if you think you know who he is…it goes much deeper than you think.

Underdog? He makes Rudy look like the Yankees. Reggie was undrafted out of Portland State where he played for former NFL coach Jerry Glanville. Undeterred, he signed on with the New Orleans Saints where he would win a Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Reggie blew out his Achilles in the preseason that year so he never played a game during the Saints Super Bowl run. He spent the entire season on IR, but he does have a ring to show for it. The next year Reggie was relegated to the practice squad for nearly the entire season before the Redskins signed him to their active roster for the seasons final week. Reggie was inactive for that game but things were looking good for 2011. Then, the lockout…another potential roadblock in his journey.

Reggie is now faced with just a few weeks to show the Redskins front office that he deserves to make the active roster. Without the benefit of OTA’s and without the use of the teams facilities for the past 3 months. It’s a tall order, but I believe he can do it. Check the site often to read Reggie’s journals as he follows his dream.

Cheers and Hail

Training Camp Champs?

Fire it up!!

Football is back, and it’s back in a big way. We’re going from zero to 60 in record speed as training camp, free agency and very soon preseason are already upon us. In past years the Redskins have earned the nickname “offseason champs” for their abilities to get everyone drinking the kool-aid with their premium free agent acquisitions…only to have those Super Bowl dreams slashed by another 6-10 season.

The Redskins are expected to be very active in free agency again this year after laying low last year. The Redskins have plenty of cap space and 40% of the NFL’s players are currently free agents. This could be a bonanza of signings that could rival any spending spurge seen during the Dan Snyder era…imagine that. But, if that happens we can’t be the “offseason champs” because it’s no longer offseason. Thus, if as expected the Redskins are aggressive and win big in free agency, the title should be “training camp champs.”

I’m really anxious to see how the Redskins are going to handle the Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb situations. I doubt either will be at Redskins Park come Thursday…are the Redskins going to let their sagas play out over a period of time or get them handled quickly? Will they be able to trade either, or both…for any value or just have to cut ties and have nothing but bad memories and lost millions to show for them? Whatever they decide, I believe they need to get it handled quickly and don’t let anymore bad cancer fester around the locker room.

The last thing I’d like to say as we wrap up this post is that I do believe the Redskins are in a better situation to deal with this crazy schedule than most other teams because of their head coach. I’m not a fan of Mike Shanahan and I’ve let that be known on several occasions…but to have a coach with 17 years experience who’s handled all types of adversity over his career, well that’s got to help some. We certainly should have a leg up on the Cowboys who have a head coach entering his first training camp and also have cap issues. Redskins > Cowboys.

Cheers and Hail

Replacement Players = Dumb Idea

I think it’s safe to say that everyone is frustrated with the lockout. By everyone I’m talking about the fans, media, players and owners. It seems as though it’s taking way too long to make this deal and every time a deal is close, another issue comes along and the process slows down again.

Yesterday the owners agreed to a proposal that was signed off on and handed over to the NFPLA for their approval which would finally bring football back into our lives. Initially fans were excited by this news until the players revealed that the owners had slipped a few things into the contract that the players had not agreed on…potentially killing the deal again. I totally agree with the players and understand their anger about this. I’ve only signed a few contracts in my life but I would never sign my name to any contract that included clauses I didn’t approve of during negotiations. I guess us normal folks can compare it too buying a house or a car, are you going to sign that contract if the dealer is delivering you a Ford Focus instead of the agreed upon BMW…I don’t think so.

Now, to the point of this post. Some folks on twitter last night were insinuating that the NFL could survive with the replacement players and that may be an avenue that the owners should consider. I laugh at the thought of this. The NFL is not the NFL without the very best players in the world. Sure, the names on the backs of the burgundy and gold have changed over the 30 years of me being a fan…but I have no interest in watching 53 inferior players running around in my favorite player’s jerseys. A player can retire due to age or injuries, a player can be cut for not performing…but an entire team cannot be replaced because the owners want to make a stand. I’ve already seen that one before, the 1987 scab teams were a horrible brand of football (despite the Redskins going 3-0).

I found this ABC News World Report from 1987 on YouTube. It validates in 2 minutes why replacement players do not work. A couple things to look for, check out the WR and his teammates from the 49ers at the :43 mark. They look like a 40+ softball team. Also, the Redskins own Neal Olkewicz pops up at the negotiating table at the 1:28 mark.

Returned tickets - who’s going to pay to watch these players?

Advertising boycotts- who’s going to pay to advertise during these games?

Network contract clauses - I’m sure networks have clauses to protect their billion dollar investments. They’re not paying all that money to air replacement games.

Business failings - who’s going to go to bars to watch these games? Who’s going to buy the Sunday Ticket? Who’s going to visit the Redskins Team Store?

Replacement players is not a dumb idea, it’s the dumbest idea ever.

Cheers and Hail

Redskins Free Agency: Show The WR’s The Money

Despite drafting 3 wide receivers in this years draft, including a potential starter in Leonard Hankerson, the WR position remains a huge hole for the Redskins. The Redskins must sign a top tier WR via free agency, but exactly how are they going to do that? Well, they’re going to have to do what they do best…overpay.

How else can you expect the Redskins to sign a premier WR on the open market? What do the Redskins have to offer Santonio Holmes or Sidney Rice? I’ll tell you, they got John Beck and a 10W-22L record over the past 2 seasons. Super Bowl caliber teams like the Bears, Chargers, Jets and Patriots are rumored to be in the market for the same WR’s the Redskins will be targeting when free agency begins. So, if you’re an free agent who can catch 60-70 balls a year from Tom Brady and have a chance to win the Super Bowl the next 3 years, or catch 80 from John Beck and go 5-11 next season…which team would you choose? I’d choose the Patriots myself, unless the Redskins offered an extra $10 million. So, Redskins fans…don’t bitch and moan if the Redskins overpay at this position, it’s something they have to do.

Before I breakdown my top 5 free agent WR’s the Redskins may target via free agency let’s look at the current roster to see just how thin we are at this position.

Anthony Armstrong - great story, great work ethic…but let’s be honest, there was a reason he is an AFL veteran and he’s best suited as a 3rd WR.

Terrence Austin - will not make the 2011 roster.

Brandon Banks - special teams and gimmick plays are his forte…if he makes the team.

Mike Furrey - will not make the 2011 roster.

Leonard Hankerson - great pick and may start this season (especially if we don’t sign any of the guys below). However, rookie WR’s rarely post big #’s their first couple seasons.

Tauras Johnson - who? The Tauras was a shitty car.

Malcolm Kelly - can’t rely of him being healthy, his roster spot is as fragile as his body.

Niles Paul - expect him to contribute on special teams but little more in 2011.

Maurice Price - who?

Aldrick Robinson - destined for the practice squad.

Roydell Williams - if he is our go-to guy on 3rd downs again next season I’m turning in my fan card.

Now, here’s a look at my top 5 free agent targets along with my predictions of what the Redskins chances are of signing each player and where each player will ultimately wind up.

1. Sidney Rice

Rice is my #1 target for several reasons, the first one being that he can make a bad quarterback look good…we will need that. Brett Favre had his best season 2 years ago by simply throwing up his crazy ass passes that Rice and his 6’4” frame jumped up and grabbed from defenders. He’s only 24 years old and seems to be a pretty model citizen compared to some other free agent WR’s. I also have Rice targeted #1 because I believe the Redskins have a legitimate chance to sign him. Rice is represented by Drew Rosenhaus, who has a great relationship with the Redskins. “Great relationship” meaning he can get Dan Snyder to fork over a huge signing bonus while eating a steak at Morton’s. Could be Shanny’s B&G version of Brandon Marshall.

Chances the Redskins sign him: 75%
2011 Team: Redskins

2. Santonio Holmes

Holmes is a big game player who already has a Super Bowl MVP. The Jets want him back badly but he’ll be looking for the biggest payday as he’s a bad step away from another suspension. The most guaranteed money just may win out…which gives the Redskins a fighting chance.

Chances the Redskins sign him: 50%
2011 Team: Jets

3. Santana Moss

I’d love to see Santana back but my concern is he signs for a little less money to play for a contender. He’s on record as saying that he’d like to comeback, but I can see him in CHI, NE or SD. My hope is that Rosenhaus (represents Moss also) talks the Danny into signing both Moss and Rice as a package deal. Don’t be surprised if this happens, Drew and Danny have worked out deals like that before.

Chances the Redskins sign him: 50%
2011 Team: Bears

4. Braylon Edwards

The Redskins have been rumored to be both interested and not interested in Edwards depending upon which web sources you follow. I hope, I pray that they aren’t interested. He played pretty well last season in his contract year but this is the kind of player who’ll roll over on you like AH. No, no, no!

Chances the Redskins sign him: 33%
2011 Team: Dolphins

5. Jacoby Jones

Ok, he’s not the 5th best free agent WR available…he may not be the 10th or 15th but he knows the offense well and could be plugged in immediately at the #2 or #3 WR position should all else fail. He had a nice 4 game stretch to end last season, catching over 20 balls.

Chances the Redskins sign him: 60%
2011 Team: Redskins

Other WR’s to consider: James Jones, Mike Sims-Walker, Lance Moore

Cheers and Hail
